When you think that your hearing is impaired due to a build up of earwax, you should visit an ear, nose, and throat doctor (known as ENT specialist). You could have an infection that is causing it to be impaired. One might get some benefit from using candles to help melt out the earwax, but always discuss this with your doctor before doing this. A blockage and pain might be from infection. Doing things without having a professional discuss what the right actions are to fix a problem such as this is never a good idea. They might be able to flush out the wax or whatever is causing the blockage with warm water, which would be a great way to restore normal function.
For all problems including swimmer's ear there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Either bacteria or a virus, or maybe something else, this is the reason that it needs to be inspected. They might say that is ok if you are experiencing pain near the eardrum or canal to apply drops of slightly warmed mineral oil or extra virgin olive oil inside by squeezing a few drops from a cotton ball down the outer canal. Don't overdo the drops and wait for the liquid to get inside, you will feel it when it happens. For other problems like sticking a q-tips inside and having it get stuck, don't pull it out, go to a hospital emergency room and let them remove it following x-rays. This region of the body is extremely sensitive and one of our major senses, hearing. Surgery might be necessary to get the cerumen out, again it can't be mentioned enough how important it is to see a professional that understands exactly what is going on. Letting something go untreated can lead to permanent damage, so take action, find out what the cause is and get it fixed as soon as possible.
